1964 – First Top of the Pops

Introducing Top of The Pops

1st January 1964; The overwhelming success of The Beatles persuaded the BBC that they needed a pop show and they commissioned 6 weekly episodes of Top of the Pops (it ran for 40 years instead). Going out live the show was Top 20 format introduced by a DJ and a dolly bird. In the first chart The Beatles had 5 records, 2 single, 2 EPs and, at Number 19, the LP With The Beatles. Our six join together at Jeff’s place in Shoreditch to watch the first episode, in sceptical delight. The entire show, in order, is Rolling Stones, The Hollies, Dusty Springfield, Swinging Blue Jeans, Dave Clark 5, Gene Pitney (the solitary American), Freddie and The Dreamers and, of course, The Beatles.
